Climbing people at a crag on Kalymnos

Kalymnos is famous for being one of the best rock climbing spots in the world. The island offers well-bolted crags and a wide variety of grades. Moreover, there is an abundance of many different routes, so you will never have to climb the same route twice! In order to get yourself acquainted with all the different routes you can either buy or rent the Kalymnos climbing guide.

What makes climbing in Kalymnos so special is its wide range of grades, with the right routes for everyone. Many routes are graded under 6b+, making it perfect for beginners and the average sport climber. However, for very experienced climbers or people, who would like to challenge themselves, there are more than 700 routes that are graded 7b and up – a 9a (Los revolucionarios) being the highest of them all. Most of the routes can be reached in no more than 30-minutes from the house.

Only 900m away from Kalymnos shore you can find the island of Telendos which a very long time ago belonged to Kalymnos but was separated by an earthquake. Telendos can be reached by boat from Myrties port. The boats run every half an hour and the 10 – minute boat ride costs 2.50 Euro per person. Telendos offers a multitude of different routes and even has various multi-pitch routes.

The nearest climbing spot is only a 5-minute ride away with the scooter and is called Ourania and Symplegados Rocks. The crag is an all day crag in a beautiful location with opposing faces, plus caves and walls in an airy location. The crags face each other so climbing either in the sun or in the shade is possible all day. Moreover, the crag often gets a nice breeze. This is the view you will get on the island of Telendos when you climb until sunset and walk back to the scooters.

The hikes to the climbing spots lead through the unique landscape of Kalymnos and often offer a very enjoyable view. Here you can see the hike leading to the new climbing sector Heroes, which is located above the Skalia village. Heroes offers fun and challenging 20 – 25 m routes with an astonishing view.

The panorama from the climbing spots often offers a beautiful scenery as well. This location is near the house above the Monastery of St. Panteleimon – a very peaceful and calm place. If you look closely you can even see Villa Anna from here.
